Cherry (Prunus serotina)—often called Black Cherry—is a highly regarded hardwood known for its warm color, smooth grain, and excellent workability. Freshly cut, the wood ranges from light pinkish-brown to reddish tones, deepening over time to a rich reddish-brown with age and exposure to light.
Cherry turns beautifully with sharp tools, producing clean cuts and crisp detail. Its fine, straight grain sands easily and finishes exceptionally well, developing a smooth, satiny luster. When properly dried, cherry is stable and predictable, making it a favorite for both functional and decorative turning projects.
Common uses include turning blanks, bowls, spindles, furniture parts, cabinets, and decorative items.
