Macacauba
Macacauba (Platymiscium spp.)—often called Macawood, Hormingo, or Orange Agate—is a striking Central and South American hardwood prized for its dramatic color contrast and fine grain. The wood typically features a golden to orange-brown base with bold dark brown or black streaks, creating a highly decorative, exotic appearance.
Macacauba turns very well with sharp tools, producing smooth cuts and crisp detail. Its grain is generally straight to slightly interlocked with a fine to medium texture, allowing it to sand cleanly and finish to a high polish. When properly dried, macacauba offers good stability and durability, making it suitable for both functional and showcase turning projects.
Common uses include turning blanks, bowls, spindles, pens, knife scales, furniture accents, and decorative turnings.
