Kiln Dried American Lacewood
American Lacewood (Platanus occidentalis)—also known as American Sycamore—is a distinctive hardwood prized for its unique “lace” or flecked figure. When quartersawn, the wood reveals bold ray patterns that create a striking, textured appearance unlike most domestic species. Color ranges from creamy white to light tan with subtle reddish or brown tones.
American Lacewood turns and machines well with sharp tools, producing smooth surfaces and crisp detail. The grain is generally interlocked, which adds visual interest and strength but benefits from controlled cuts on the lathe. When properly dried, it offers good stability and finishes nicely, especially with clear finishes that enhance the dramatic figure.
Commonly used for turning blanks, bowls, spindles, furniture accents, and decorative projects, American Lacewood is favored when visual impact is a priority.
