Maple Burl is one of the most sought-after burl woods, prized for its spectacular swirling grain, clusters of burl eyes, and exceptional natural figure. The wood ranges from creamy white to light golden brown and often features intricate patterns, curls, and birdseye-like formations that make every blank completely unique. Maple Burl turns beautifully with sharp tools, revealing remarkable figure as the project takes shape. Its fine, dense grain produces smooth cuts, holds crisp detail, and sands easily to a silky surface. When properly dried, Maple Burl offers excellent stability and finishes to a rich, lustrous sheen that highlights its incredible depth and character. Highly prized for its beauty and rarity, Maple Burl is a favorite for creating heirloom-quality and showcase turnings. Common uses include turning blanks, bowls, hollow forms, platters, lidded boxes, pens, knife scales, and decorative art pieces.
