Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is one of North America’s most prized hardwoods, valued for its rich color, workability, and timeless appeal. The heartwood ranges from deep chocolate brown to purplish-brown, often accented with darker streaks, while the sapwood is a pale cream color. Black Walnut turns smoothly with sharp tools, offering excellent control and clean cuts. Its grain is typically straight with occasional curl or figure, allowing for crisp detail and graceful shaping. When properly dried, walnut is stable and finishes exceptionally well, developing a warm, natural luster. Common uses include turning blanks, bowls, spindles, furniture parts, gunstocks, and decorative projects.

Not as nice as the cherry blank that you sent me. Undersized in one area and sap wood . Not a premium turning blank.

Rough sawn blanks are not our standard premium blanks hence the discounted price. They are listed as slightly undersized up to 1/4' and sapwood is acceptable up to 25% of the blank. These stanards are listed clearly on the website.
