Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is one of North America’s most prized hardwoods, valued for its rich color, workability, and timeless appeal. The heartwood ranges from deep chocolate brown to purplish-brown, often accented with darker streaks, while the sapwood is a pale cream color. Black Walnut turns smoothly with sharp tools, offering excellent control and clean cuts. Its grain is typically straight with occasional curl or figure, allowing for crisp detail and graceful shaping. When properly dried, walnut is stable and finishes exceptionally well, developing a warm, natural luster. Common uses include turning blanks, bowls, spindles, furniture parts, gunstocks, and decorative projects.

black walnut bowl blank

I used this piece to make a base for a lamp out of a black walnut figured gun stock blank. The piece of black walnut from Gotwood? came in very quickly and looks great. It does not have the same type of figuring however there is also an enormous price difference, so I did not expect it to fully match. Still if looks great and really compliments the other wood. I only buy my wood from here, because I can always count on it being great wood.
