Zebrawood (Microberlinia brazzavillensis) is a striking African hardwood prized for its bold, high-contrast striping that resembles a zebra’s pattern. The wood features a light tan to golden background with dark brown to nearly black stripes, creating dramatic visual impact.
Zebrawood turns well with sharp tools and controlled cuts. Its grain is typically interlocked with a coarse, open texture, giving it a distinctive feel and pronounced figure. With proper sanding and grain filling, it finishes beautifully, highlighting the dramatic striping. When properly dried, zebrawood offers good strength and stability.
Common uses include turning blanks, bowls, spindles, pens, furniture accents, and decorative turnings.
Special Note:
Blanks are rift or quartersawn to show off the striped figure. Ocassionally bowl blanks over 8 inches may be flat sawn.
