The wood ranges from creamy white to light tan, with bold dark lines and zones created by natural fungal activity, making each piece one of a kind. Spalted Hard Maple turns best with sharp tools and light cuts, especially in softer spalted areas. Its fine underlying maple grain allows for good detail, and stabilization or careful finishing can enhance strength where spalting is heavy. When properly dried and handled, it sands well and finishes beautifully, highlighting the striking contrast. Common uses include turning blanks, bowls, vessels, spindles, pens, and decorative showcase pieces.
