Figured Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is a premium domestic hardwood prized for its rich color and striking natural figure. The heartwood ranges from deep chocolate brown to purplish-brown, often showcasing beautiful curl, crotch, or feather figure that adds depth and visual interest. Figured Black Walnut turns smoothly with sharp tools, allowing for clean cuts and crisp detail. Its fine, stable grain sands easily and finishes exceptionally well, developing a warm, natural luster that highlights the figure. When properly dried, walnut offers excellent stability for both functional and decorative turning projects. These pieces contain medium to heavy figure through at least 75% of the blank. Cut from the crotchwood section of the tree they may contain small cracks and bark pockets.
