Product Description

Purpleheart (Peltogyne spp.) is a striking exotic hardwood prized for its vivid purple color and exceptional durability. Freshly cut, the wood may appear brownish but quickly turns a deep purple when exposed to light, often darkening further over time to a rich, eggplant hue. Purpleheart turns cleanly with sharp tools, producing crisp detail and smooth surfaces. Its dense, fine grain sands well and finishes to a high polish. When properly dried, purpleheart offers excellent stability and strength, making it suitable for both functional and decorative turning projects. Common uses include turning blanks, bowls, spindles, pens, tool handles, furniture accents, and decorative pieces.

   Kiln dried to below 10% moisture content

Figured Purpleheart wood spindle blank

To start off, I love working with Purpleheart wood. It is so cool looking. This is my first time purchasing Figured Purpleheart wood. I am in the process of cutting and sanding it getting set for a shellac finish. So far I am not sure exactly what they mean by figuring. The grain structure is still looking the same as all of my other spindle work with the eyes on 2 sides. This is only caused by the direction of the grain as compared to the cutting. I know that the grain generally looks much better once it is fully sanded down to 1200 grit and covered with 3-4 coats of shellac or poly. I will update the review when I am finished with the project. The quality is fantastic as always with Got Wood LLC.
