Black Locust’s Durability Stops at the Sapwood
Black locust heartwood is highly decay-resistant, but its pale sapwood is not. Natural durability comes largely from protective compounds concentrated during heartwood formation.
Why it’s useful: A blank containing sapwood should not be assumed equally decay-resistant throughout—important when choosing wood for outdoor turnings or moisture-prone projects.
