Wenge and white wenge can display remarkably similar grain patterns, but the name is misleading. White wenge is not a pale-colored variety of wenge. The two woods come from different genera, have noticeably different working characteristics, and produce dramatically different-looking finished turnings.

True wenge is chosen for its deep chocolate-brown color, nearly black striping, hardness, and bold contrast. White wenge—more properly called lati—has a similar coarse, banded grain structure but ranges from cream to straw yellow.

For woodturners, the choice comes down to more than color. Wenge is harder, heavier, more durable, more splinter-prone, and generally more demanding on tools. Lati is somewhat easier to turn and finish, but it moves more with changes in moisture and requires careful blank selection and drying.

Are Wenge and White Wenge Related?

Despite their similar names, wenge and white wenge are not especially close botanical relatives.

True wenge is Millettia laurentii. White wenge is a commercial name applied to lati, most commonly Amphimas pterocarpoides and sometimes Amphimas ferrugineus. Both belong to the broader legume family, Fabaceae, but they are classified in separate genera.

“White wenge” is therefore a descriptive trade name. It refers to lati’s resemblance to wenge’s grain—not to its botanical identity.

Lati is also sold under names including:

When purchasing white wenge, checking the scientific name is the best way to confirm what you are getting.

Why Do Their Grain Patterns Look So Similar?

The resemblance comes primarily from prominent bands of parenchyma.

Parenchyma consists of storage cells within the wood. In both wenge and lati, these cells form wide, repeating bands around or between the pores. When a board or turning blank is cut in the right orientation, the bands produce long, alternating lines that can look almost woven.

On flatsawn surfaces, the bands may form sweeping, feathered, or irregular streaks. On quartersawn surfaces, they tend to appear straighter and more uniform.

The effect is especially dramatic in wenge because of the strong contrast between its dark brown background and nearly black lines. Lati presents a similar structure in cream, yellow, and golden-brown tones.

This shared appearance can make the two woods look like light and dark versions of the same species even though they are botanically distinct.

Wenge: Color and Appearance

Freshly cut wenge is generally medium brown, sometimes with reddish or yellowish undertones. Its defining feature is the presence of very dark brown or nearly black streaks.

Oil and many clear finishes deepen the color substantially. A freshly finished piece can become so dark that some areas appear almost black. In low light, the grain may seem subtle; under direct light, the alternating bands become more visible.

Unlike many dark tropical woods, wenge can become somewhat lighter with prolonged exposure to sunlight. That does not mean it will turn pale, but the richest dark tones may soften over time.

Because wenge has very large pores, an unfinished or simply oiled surface retains a distinctly open-grained texture. This can be attractive on decorative turnings, especially when the goal is to preserve the natural character of the wood.

White Wenge: Color and Appearance

Lati ranges from creamy white and pale straw to yellowish brown. The sapwood and heartwood may not be sharply separated.

With age and exposure to light, the initially pale wood normally becomes a warmer golden yellow or light golden brown. A clear oil finish accelerates this visual change and emphasizes the darker grain bands.

The result is not simply “light wenge.” Lati has its own appearance. It can resemble a combination of ash, light-colored iroko, and wenge, depending on how the blank is cut.

Flatsawn lati generally produces the most dramatic figure, but it is also the grain orientation most likely to show dimensional movement. That tradeoff is important when selecting blanks for wide bowls, platters, or hollow forms.

Weight, Hardness, and Strength

Wenge is the heavier and harder of the two woods.

Average dried wenge weighs approximately 54 pounds per cubic foot and has a commonly reported Janka hardness of around 1,930 pounds-force. Lati averages approximately 49 pounds per cubic foot and about 1,200 pounds-force on the Janka scale. Both woods feel substantial, but the difference becomes obvious during turning. Wenge requires more force during roughing and places greater demands on cutting edges. Lati is still a fairly hard tropical hardwood, but it generally feels less punishing.

Wenge is a good choice when hardness, wear resistance, and a substantial feel are priorities. Lati offers enough strength for most decorative and utility turnings without being quite as demanding.

Turning Wenge

Wenge can turn extremely well, but it rewards good technique and punishes dull tools.

Roughing

Sharp bowl gouges and spindle roughing gouges will cut wenge cleanly. Once the edge begins to dull, however, the tool is more likely to crush or tear the softer bands between the denser portions of the grain.

Heavy scraping can exaggerate this problem. A scraper may remove the softer material more aggressively, leaving the harder dark bands slightly raised. Light shear-scraping is usually more effective than presenting a scraper flat to the surface.

Keep the bevel supported and use controlled cuts. For final shaping, a freshly sharpened gouge generally leaves a better surface than trying to sand away torn grain later.

Splintering

Wenge is notorious for long, sharp splinters. The coarse grain can break away along the edge of a blank, particularly at corners and end grain.

Wear gloves while handling rough blanks, but do not wear gloves near rotating machinery. Once the blank is mounted on the lathe, keep hands clear and use tools or a brush to remove loose shavings.

Edges around rims and openings should be supported with light cuts. Aggressive cuts directed toward an unsupported edge can pull out large fragments.

Tool Wear

Wenge dulls cutting edges relatively quickly. High-speed steel tools work, but they may need to be sharpened more often than when turning walnut, cherry, or maple.

Carbide tools can be useful for roughing, but they do not eliminate tearout. A sharp gouge or skew is still preferable when the cleanest possible surface is required.

Sanding

Wenge can sand unevenly because its alternating grain bands do not have exactly the same density. Excessive pressure may remove softer areas faster and produce a rippled surface.

Use:

  • Fresh, sharp abrasive
  • Light sanding pressure
  • Moderate lathe speed
  • Frequent dust removal
  • A firm sanding pad on broad surfaces

Do not skip grits aggressively. Deep scratches can become difficult to remove without rounding details or making the grain uneven.

Turning White Wenge or Lati

Lati is generally easier to machine than true wenge, although it still offers greater cutting resistance than many domestic hardwoods.

Sharp tools can produce a clean surface, particularly when the grain is straight. The wood may still tear along the coarse bands if tools become dull or if the grain changes direction within the blank.

Lati is less notorious for dangerous splinters, but rough blanks should still be handled carefully. Its coarse grain can create sharp edges and brittle fibers.

For best results:

  • Use a sharp gouge for final cuts.
  • Reduce the depth of cut as the piece approaches its finished shape.
  • Shear-scrape lightly rather than relying on heavy scraping.
  • Stabilize punky, checked, or unusually porous areas before final sanding.
  • Avoid overheating the wood during sanding.

Lati glues and finishes more predictably than resinous pieces of wenge. This makes it especially useful for segmented work, laminated turning blanks, handles, and projects that require dependable glue joints.

Drying and Dimensional Stability

This is one of the most important differences between the two woods.

For turners, this means a dry-looking lati blank should still be checked with a moisture meter. Allow it to acclimate to the shop before beginning a thin-walled or dimensionally critical project.

If turning lati green:

  1. Rough-turn the piece with an even wall thickness.
  2. Leave enough material for distortion and final truing.
  3. Slow the drying process.
  4. Inspect regularly for end checking.
  5. Return the piece to the lathe only after its moisture content has stabilized.

Wenge can also crack if dried too quickly, but properly processed commercial blanks are generally more predictable.

Finishing Wenge

A clear oil or oil-varnish blend emphasizes wenge’s dark color and bold contrast. It also leaves the wood’s open pores visible.

That texture can be part of the appeal. If a glass-smooth surface is desired, however, the pores must be filled. Simply adding more finish may not level them efficiently.

A common schedule is:

  1. Sand carefully through the desired grit.
  2. Remove dust from the large pores.
  3. Apply a compatible grain filler or sanding slurry.
  4. Allow it to cure completely.
  5. Level the surface.
  6. Apply the final clear finish.

Avoid loading the pores with pale sanding dust. Light-colored dust trapped in the grain can make the surface appear chalky. Compressed air, vacuuming, or wiping with an appropriate solvent can help clean the pores before finishing.

Wenge can contain resinous or oily areas that interfere with some adhesives and finishes. Freshly prepare glue surfaces and test the intended finishing system on scrap whenever possible.

Finishing White Wenge

Clear oil dramatically warms lati and changes pale yellow wood into a richer golden color. Water-based finishes generally preserve more of the original light tone, while oil-based products create stronger amber coloration.

Lati also has large pores, so the intended surface should guide the finish schedule.

For a natural-looking bowl or decorative turning, an oil-and-wax finish can preserve the tactile grain. For pens, handles, stoppers, and polished display pieces, filling the pores before applying a film finish creates a smoother result.

Because the pale wood can show contamination easily:

  • Use clean abrasives.
  • Avoid transferring dark sanding dust from other species.
  • Clean metal residue from the tool rest.
  • Do not sand lati immediately after wenge without cleaning the lathe and dust collection area.

Black wenge dust lodged in white wenge pores can be very difficult to remove.

Safety and Wood Dust

Dust protection is important with both species and especially important with wenge.

Durability

Wenge heartwood is rated as very durable and has good resistance to termites. It is difficult to treat with preservatives because the heartwood does not readily absorb them.

Lati ranges from non-durable to moderately durable. It can be susceptible to dry-wood borers and other insect attack, although it may offer moderate resistance to fungi and termites. White wenge is especially well suited for:

Which One Should You Choose?

Choose wenge when you want:

  • Maximum contrast with pale woods

  • A dense, substantial finished piece

Choose white wenge or lati when you want:

  • Wenge-like grain in a pale or golden wood
  • Easier cutting and gluing
  • A larger turning without the visual weight of dark wenge
  • A surface suitable for dye or contrasting grain filler
  • A less familiar species with a distinctive appearance

For pure drama, wenge is difficult to beat. For a more unusual project that highlights grain rather than dark color, lati may be the more interesting choice.

Sustainability and Availability

Wenge is widely available in the specialty wood market, but high-quality stock is expensive. Millettia laurentii is classified as endangered on the IUCN Red List, although it is not currently listed in the CITES Appendices. Lati is less commonly imported. It is widespread in parts of West and Central Africa, and available information does not indicate the same level of threat as wenge. Its relative rarity in North American woodworking is largely a matter of limited commercial importation rather than extreme scarcity.

Final Verdict

Wenge and white wenge share a bold, banded grain pattern, but that is where the strongest similarity ends.

Wenge is darker, harder, heavier, more durable, and harder on tools. It creates exceptional contrast but requires careful cutting, sanding, handling, and dust control.

White wenge, or lati, is lighter in color and easier to work. Its pale gold surface reveals a grain structure that can closely resemble wenge, especially on flatsawn faces. Its principal drawback is greater movement and a higher risk of drying defects.

Neither wood is universally better. Wenge is the choice for dark color and dramatic contrast. Lati is the choice for bold grain in a lighter, more adaptable palette. For woodturners, both can produce memorable results—as long as their very different personalities are taken into account.
