Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is one of North America’s most prized hardwoods, valued for its rich color, workability, and timeless appeal. The heartwood ranges from deep chocolate brown to purplish-brown, often accented with darker streaks, while the sapwood is a pale cream color.
Black Walnut turns smoothly with sharp tools, offering excellent control and clean cuts. Its grain is typically straight with occasional curl or figure, allowing for crisp detail and graceful shaping. When properly dried, walnut is stable and finishes exceptionally well, developing a warm, natural luster.
Common uses include turning blanks, bowls, spindles, furniture parts, gunstocks, and decorative projects.
