Butternut (Juglans cinerea) is a lightweight, soft hardwood known for its warm color and easy workability. Often called White Walnut, butternut ranges from light tan to pale brown with a soft, open grain that gives it a rustic, inviting appearance.
Butternut turns and carves very easily, making it a great choice for beginners and for projects requiring smooth shaping with minimal effort. It cuts cleanly with sharp tools, sands quickly, and accepts stains and finishes well. When properly dried, butternut offers good stability, though it is softer than black walnut.
Common uses include turning blanks, bowls, spindles, carvings, furniture accents, and decorative projects.
