Ash’s Open Pores Create Dramatic Finishes
Ash is ring-porous: each growth ring begins with bands of conspicuously large vessels. On a turning, those open pores can retain contrasting grain filler or liming wax after the surrounding surface is wiped clean.
Practical takeaway: Dye an Ash turning dark, seal it and work light-colored liming wax across the grain. The wax highlights the natural growth-ring pattern—especially effectively on bowls and hollow forms.
