Boxelder Produces Red Color Around Injuries

Boxelder’s red or pink streaks can develop as the living tree responds to wounds from insects, birds or environmental damage. Research found the color even in trees that were wounded without being inoculated with fungi.

Surprising takeaway: The red is not necessarily fungal decay or damage from a particular beetle. Sound, firm red-streaked wood can create dramatic turnings, although the color commonly fades with prolonged light exposure.
